Chan’s Martial Arts is an International martial arts community with schools throughout New Zealand, as well as oversea branches in Australia, USA and UK. It was founded by Grandmaster SC Chan in 1975.
We teach Kung Fu and Tai Chi, and have 2 schools in the Auckland region, located respectively in Newmarket and North Shore, with another 2 schools under development. The international headquarters are in Christchurch.

Our instructors teach both Tai Chi and Kung Fu classes. While most people recognize Tai Chi’s health benefits, many people are not aware of the fact that Tai Chi is regarded as the highest form of martial art by the Chinese. Tai Chi Chuan in Chinese means ‘Ultimate First’. Our style of kung fu ‘Shao Chi Quan’ or ‘Small Ultimate First’ is a world-first martial art to couple modern combat techniques with that of the time-proven Tai Chi biomechanics. The result is our students are still training and improving well into their 50’s and 60’s.
Shao Chi Chuan (Small Ultimate First) is a unique martial arts system developed by Grandmaster S C Chan. It uses traditional kung fu principles as well as modern understanding of physics and biomechanics, making it an effective and complete martial art that is quickly applicable. It can be described as a modern interface between the very hard Shao Lin Chuan and the very soft Tai Chi Chuan.
It is known as “The Stressfree way” because the system is designed to minimise stress and the risk of injury.
We have a very structured and logical syllabus starting with fundamental stances and basic drills. Each grade has additional material in a range of areas leading to very balanced and complete martial art. There are also increasing technical requirements at each rank to improve martial skill and allow anyone with diligence to gain effective self defense.
We foster a friendly training environment with instructors and senior ranks always on hand to encourage and aid junior members. We welcome anyone interested in learning kung fu, from age 12 upwards.
Our classes are held on Monday and Wednesday in Newmarket.
