such a great environment to train in! really friendly instructors, grand master and club members. a club i would 100 recommend
I attended NPTHC and initially enjoyed the training, though this didn’t last long. Unfortunately Master Drummond is far more focussed on self promotion than on putting students first, relentless fundraising for more money (even though fees are already paid by students) and has a very bad reputation around town (rightfully so) if you dig just beneath the surface or ask the many ex students who no longer attend. There are a number of other martial arts clubs around New Plymouth area; if you do attend NPTHC please trust your gut feelings and when it starts to feel like you are being constantly asked to do more than just turn up and train hard (ie you need to fundraiser or help with recruitment drives for the club), or when you find yourself feeling like “this doesn’t seem right/what he is expecting of us is beyond what is usual for a club” - get out. I did and havent looked back. I am so happy where I am now; I hold a lot of respect for my instructor and club. He has integrity, nana, kindness and humility (despite being well accomplished).
I offer this as an honest opinion as I really have concerns about this club. Just ask around town about which clubs are legit and have good reputations and go from there. If you go to NPTHC, just trust your gut and get out when it starts feeling fishy (it probably will). My biggest advice here is to ask around about what ex students/other parents of kids who attended NPTHC feel about their time training with Master Drummond/NPTHC; lots leave with sadly shocking stories and you can decide for yourself - also ask how many black belts he has managed to grade - look at class photos in the past few years to see how many students remain - the crazy drop out rate says it all. Just go in with your eyes wide open as it’s better to be prewarned and decide for yourself.
