The Otago University ITF Taekwon-Do Club practices the ITF style of Taekwon-Do developed by General Choi Hong-Hi. Taekwon-Do is an unarmed martial art with a large focus on kicking as well as hand techniques. "Tae" means to jump or kick with the foot, "Kwon" means to punch with the hand or fist, and "Do" means art or way. Training generally consists of practising fundamental movements, patterns, sparring, self-defence, board breaks, and fitness.
We are affiliated to International Taekwon-Do. The club is headed by Ana Rakonjac, 2nd Dan, and Dean Jenkins, 3rd Dan. We primarily cater to students at Otago University and Otago Polytechnic. The club is actively involved in tournaments, with students competing at the regional and national level on a regular basis. Beginners are welcome at any time.
